Pick the base before the sparkle
Start with an outfit that fits the setting: perhaps black trousers and a knit, a simple dress or jeans and a shirt for a relaxed gathering. Check any invitation guidance first. A small accessory can alter the feeling of an outfit, but it cannot answer a dress code you have not read.
Try the base combination in front of a mirror, including the shoes. Make any practical adjustments before adding decoration. If the waistband feels tight or a sleeve keeps falling into your hands, a necklace will not solve that problem. Choose clothes you can sit, eat and move in comfortably for the plans ahead.
Choose a detail with a clear place
A pair of earrings, a coloured scarf, a hair accessory or a bright belt can provide the change. Pick one to begin with and see whether anything else is needed. A red knit may already carry the festive feeling without additional sparkle. If you wear a brooch, check that the fabric can support it and that you are comfortable making a pinhole.
Look at the combination with your coat on as well. A large necklace may catch on the collar, while a hair accessory might make a hat awkward. Choose an arrangement that survives the journey rather than one that only works after a careful indoor setup.
Put the pieces back into ordinary use
Before buying an extra item, imagine wearing it on another day. Earrings that also work with a plain shirt may be more useful to you than an accessory reserved for one party. You can still choose something purely for fun; just recognise that purpose. Afterwards, store delicate pieces separately so they are easy to find and ready when you want to wear them again.
