See the neckline as it is worn

Put on the top and let it settle before choosing jewellery. An open shirt collar, a crew neck and a V-neck create different spaces, and those spaces change when you sit or move. A pendant that looks centred while standing may disappear beneath the fabric later.

Try a shorter and a longer option if you own them. One may sit within the neckline while the other falls over the garment. Neither arrangement needs to follow a strict geometric rule; choose the relationship you prefer.

Check contact with the fabric

Rough settings, clasps and sharp edges can snag a fine knit or delicate blouse. Run a careful visual check over the jewellery before wearing it against vulnerable fabric. A necklace that repeatedly catches is better paired with something else.

If a top has an elaborate collar or decorative front, earrings may provide enough detail without a necklace. Removing one item can make the outfit feel more comfortable as well as visually simpler.

Move before you leave

Sit down, turn your head and put on your jacket. Check whether the necklace becomes trapped under a collar or whether a pendant taps uncomfortably against buttons. Long necklaces can also interfere with a scarf or bag strap.

Store the pieces separately enough to avoid tangling, and follow their material-specific care guidance. If a piece irritates your skin, stop wearing it rather than treating discomfort as part of the outfit. Jewellery should be a detail you enjoy, not something that distracts you all day.
