Begin with the surface underneath

Try the dress over the underlayers you intend to wear. A seam, thick waistband or bunched sleeve can show through a fine knit even when the dress itself fits comfortably. Choose layers that stay smooth when you sit, and avoid making them tighter simply to hide an outline.

If the dress clings more than you want, check whether the size, fabric weight or underlayer is the cause. Adding a belt will change the shape but will not necessarily solve discomfort.

Make the outer layer generous enough

A short jacket can leave the dress line visible, while a long coat creates more coverage. With either, move your arms and sit down before deciding. Narrow sleeves over a thick knitted dress can make an otherwise comfortable outfit frustrating.

Cardigans can work over a dress too. Compare the two hems and textures. If both layers are bulky and long, a lighter cardigan or a more structured jacket may be simpler to wear.

Test the shoes with the moving hem

Ankle boots, tall boots and trainers each change how the dress feels. Look at whether the hem catches on the boot top or rides up as you walk. A side slit should allow the movement you need without requiring constant adjustment.

After wearing, give the dress the storage its construction needs. A heavy knit may stretch on an unsuitable hanger. Check its care guidance and use a fold or support that avoids pulling it out of shape between wears.
