Remember the whole combination

When an outfit feels comfortable through a normal day, note the shoes and outer layer as well as the main clothes. A jumper and trousers may seem interchangeable until you remember that the hem only worked with one pair of shoes.

A quick photo is useful if you want one, but a short written note can do the same job. Include practical details such as a warmer underlayer, a bag that stayed on your shoulder or sleeves that fit inside the coat.

Change one detail if you feel like it

Repeat the outfit exactly when that is the easiest answer. If you want some variety, change a scarf, a shirt or the shoes while keeping the rest familiar. This makes it easier to judge whether the new detail improves the outfit for the day ahead.

You do not need a different combination for every calendar entry. Several situations may ask for the same level of warmth, comfort and formality. Let those overlaps reduce the amount of planning required.

Make repetition possible

Clothes need to be clean, dry and available when you want to wear them. Notice whether one frequently used item spends most of the week waiting for care. Adjusting the laundry routine may help more than adding another outfit.

If you eventually buy a duplicate basic, make it a considered choice based on actual use. Keep your notes about the original fit and fabric. A similar-looking item may behave differently, so try the replacement as carefully as a completely new style.
